What are the latest residential roofing product trends and updates you should have on your radar?
Whether you’re a builder, remodeler or roofing contractor, the latest product trends and updates can play an important role in your business.
In fact, staying on top of roofing industry trends can not only help set you apart from your competition, but also position you favorably as a trusted resource for homeowners looking for the “latest and greatest” in roofing styles and performance options. And as a building professional, earning the trust of your homeowner customers is the key to also earning their business and receiving future referrals.
Mark Okland, IKO’s Product Development Manager, explores three major roofing industry product trends to keep an eye on in 2017:
Color plays a large role in consumer product selection and psychology. In fact, according to a study of the “Impact of Color on Marketing” published in Management Decision, “People make up their minds within 90 seconds of their initial interactions with either people or products. About 62-90 percent of the assessment [of products] is based on colors alone.”
The path to purchase for a roof is certainly a lengthier one than for a new toothbrush or headphones, but the same psychological influences are at play. Many contractors can agree that one of homeowners’ top priorities in selecting a new roof is the aesthetics, and more specifically — the color.
That’s why offering your homeowner customers a variety of shingle styles and color options are important in setting your business apart.
As such, IKO is continuing to expand our color offerings in 2017, including three new colors for our IKO Dynasty® shingles with ArmourZone® for a total of 11 diverse, high-definition options that suit any architectural style.
Aside from aesthetics, roof shingle color can play an important role in energy efficiency, too.
By now, you’ve probably heard about Title 24 in California, which includes specific provisions for roofs. As part of California’s Building Energy Efficiency Standards, Title 24 is updated every three years, with the latest update taking effect recently in January 2017.
One of the simplest ways to comply with Title 24 standards as they apply to a home’s roof (especially for re-roofs) is to install infrared reflective roofing shingles, otherwise known as “cool roofs.” Cool roofs use shingles with high solar reflectance and thermal emittance properties that help to avert the sun’s infrared heat energy away from a structure in order to help decrease energy usage and costs associated with cooling (air conditioning).
IKO recently launched its line of Cambridge Cool Colors architectural laminate shingles, which are designed to comply with Title 24 standards. The line currently includes four color options, and we plan to introduce an additional color, Amber Burst, to the portfolio early this year.
All five colors align with the latest home exterior color trends and will be available throughout California with additional limited availability in surrounding West Coast states.
We’re also continuing to see growth in high-end, modern looks that are created with premium shingles.
These higher-end products are popular among homeowners because they can get the desired look and curb appeal of cedar shakes or natural slate tile without the associated maintenance worries and expense. They are also a hit with contractors because of their ease of installation, as well as providing the opportunity to upsell a project for higher profitability.
IKO offers three unique, luxurious premium shingles, including IKO Armourshake™, IKO Crowne Slate™ and IKO Royal Estate™ shingles.
IKO Armourshake premium shingles have a contoured, dimensional profile with an interlaced design that rivals the look and appeal of traditional cedar shakes. Also, IKO Crowne Slate and IKO Royal Estate premium shingles provide the look of natural slate tiles without the added expense.
Plus, our newest IKO Ultra HP® High Profile Ridge Cap Shingles also accentuate the roofline and rakes with a dimensional high-profile and textured look for the perfect finishing touch. They have been designed to complement the aesthetics and performance attributes of all IKO premium shingle offerings, as well as IKO’s performance shingle options.
