The Health Product Declaration (HPD) is a voluntary report by manufacturers that discloses a product’s materials and associated health information. This standardized report supports disclosing information about a product’s material content down to 100 ppm. The HPD Open Standard framework is governed by the HPD Collaborative (HPDC), a nonprofit member organization. The included information can cover everything from VOC emissions and recycled content to other environmental impacts and associated health hazards. It allows manufacturers to be completely transparent and provide a comprehensive view of the health and environmental attributes of all materials, not just the major items.
The HPD Open Standard works to the benefit of everyone involved in the building process. As an architect and designer, the HPD can help make educated decisions about choosing sustainable materials that meet LEED requirements and other certifications like the Well Building Standard. With the new LEEDv4 certification system, buildings that specifically use products by manufacturers with HPDs are rewarded with additional credits. Since installers are the ones exposed to the materials, an HPD document can help companies learn about possible hazards that aren’t always disclosed in other documents like the Safety Data Sheet (SDS). An HPD can help build trust in manufacturers and help them stand out to architects when selecting products for a project.
