The fact that IKO decided to support the Paralympian, Peter Genyn, was no coincidence. Peter’s motto – ‘moving the goalposts’ – fits in perfectly with IKO’s business philosophy. Bearing in mind his record to date (including two silver medals at the European Championship and World Championship) IKO had great expectations.
And, to put it mildly Peter didn’t disappoint, on the contrary!
At the Paralympics in Rio in September he won gold TWICE! He was the
fastest amongst the best in the world in both the 100 m and 400 m events.
TWO GOLD MEDALS
“It was an incredibly difficult race,” stated Genyn, who has the world record (1:18.09) to his name.
“I missed a few opportunities at the start and that takes a lot of energy, which I lacked at the end. I was aware that the Mexicans were gaining, but fortunately I had enough reserves to keep my opponents at bay.”
“Two gold medals, I have reached the top,” the wheelchair athlete continued.
With 400 metres you die three deaths. You’re ok up to 300 metres but thereafter you just hope to reach the finish. I was less stressed today than for the 100 metres.
The pressure was not as intense because I had already won one gold medal.”
Peter Genyn has great tenacity. At the age of 16 a badly judged dive into a shallow pond resulted in him being partially paralysed,
but he did not despair.
First he made a name for himself playing wheelchair rugby. Together with his team they put Belgium on the map in this discipline, with a series of medals including gold at the European Championship in 2009.
MOVING THE GOALPOSTS
Peter not only won in Rio, he even established a new paralympic record.
IKO enertherm is particularly proud to be able to sponsor this TOP athlete, who delivers an exceptional performance,” said Dirk Theuns, CEO of IKO NV Belgium.
“For an athlete preparation always involves intense training, nutrition, personal care and having access to top quality equipment. Every link in the chain must be perfect and deliver optimum performance. It is the only way to push the boundaries.
This philosophy, which Peter Genyn successfully puts into practice, fits in perfectly with our own corporate beliefs. For IKO too the need to continually improve the performance of our products – roofing and insulation – requires day to day adjustment of all aspects of the value chain, from research and development through production and the selection of the best installation partner.”
